With no year and no place provided it is difficult to find out more about her. What we do know from the way she carried her thread and misspelled a word or two, perhaps even her middle name, is that she was not so serious about perfection. The whimsical motifs, including the heart in hand motifs, not commonly seen on samplers, bright colors and plentiful pots of flowers on her sampler make it clear Sarah had a bright spirit, despite the somewhat dreary verse common to the times. The original sampler’s stitched area measures 13.5 inches wide by 15.25 inches high on a cream cotton ground fabric measuring 76 threads to the inch, over two in red cotton thread, which equates to approximately 38 stitches per inch. The stitch count is 519 stitches wide by 573 stitches high and the edges are hemstitched as is traditional for Bristol orphanage samplers. Sadly, a death record exists for a young fourteen-yea- old by the same name who died on September 4, 1849, buried at Burtonville Cemetery, Quebec Canada, daughter of Alonzo and Mary Hotchkiss. The town names at the bottom are the ancestral homes of the designer’s four Irish grandparents.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eThe first alphabets on samplers in Ireland seem to appear in the early seventeenth century and were probably a school exercise. Simple lettering skills were practiced with a view to the neat marking of laundry. In a large household or institution, it was important for each person’s clothes to be marked with their name so that the laundry could be returned to the right people. Small girls learned to stitch the alphabet at a very early age. Alphabet stitching as a means of recording letters for marking linen was its most common use, but not the only purpose. Plain Quakers didn’t embrace religious images on their samplers and focused on alphabets and texts. The motifs themselves are Quaker ones found on other similarly styled samplers, with the motifs appearing here without the signature medallions often seen on Quaker  samplers.
